White wines, generally crisp, mineral-driven blends of Arinto, Viosinho, Gouveio, Malvasia Fina and an assortment of other rare but local varieties, are produced in small quantities but worth noting. Tinta Cão, a fine but low-yielding variety, is now rarely planted but still highly valued for its ability to produce excellent, complex wines. Touriga Franca shows great persistence of fruit and Tinta Barroca helps round out the blend with its supple texture. Tinta Roriz (Spain's Tempranillo) adds bright acidity and red fruit flavors. Touriga Nacional is the finest of these, prized for its deep color, tannins and floral aromatics. While more than 100 indigenous varieties are approved for wine production in the Douro, there are five primary grapes that make up most Port and the region's excellent, though less known, red table wines. The Douro's best sites, rare outcroppings of Cambrian schist, are reserved for vineyards that yield high quality Port. The vineyards of the Douro, set on the slopes surrounding the Douro River (known as the Duero in Spain), are incredibly steep, necessitating the use of terracing and thus, manual vineyard management as well as harvesting. The home of Port-perhaps the most internationally acclaimed beverage-the Douro region of Portugal is one of the world’s oldest delimited wine regions, established in 1756. If you want to delve deep into the heart of American moviemaking's rich 1970s, this is as good a place to be as Nashville, Shampoo, Chinatown, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Network or Taxi Driver. The Grove Book of Hollywood by Christopher Silvester (Grove Press, 2002)įew movies are as ripe for rediscovery as Night Moves. Six months after the film came and went at the box office, singer-songwriter Bob Seeger had a Billboard Hot 100 hit and near overnight success with his - allegedly unrelated - single "Night Moves."Īrthur Penn: American Director by Nat Segaloff (University Press of Kentucky, 2011)Īrthur Penn interview by Jean-Pierre Coursodon, Cinema (May 1977) (A long-standing rumor maintains that Faye Dunaway turned down Night Moves to costar opposite Jack Nicholson in Chinatown in fact, Dunaway's manager, Sue Mengers, used a nonexistent offer from Penn as a bargaining chip to win her client the role in the Polanski film over short list rival Jane Fonda.) Night Moves also provided early work for rising stars James Woods and Melanie Griffith. Hackman's lumpen gumshoe Harry Moseby has lost nothing in topicality over the course of four decades but it is the minor players who sell the story, none more so than Jennifer Warren as the quirkiest, most conflicted, and yet most oddly appealing femme fatale in the crime film canon. Key to the film's happy reappraisal is its atypicality and freshness, a quality gained by willful forfeiture on the part of Penn and cinematographer Bruce Surtees of the standard noir curlicues - the high contrast shadows, the smoke-filled rooms, the canted angles - which would have rendered the film at best rote or at worst kitsch. Seldom revisited but never forgotten, Night Moves has enjoyed a slow appreciation of its critical market share over the course of forty years. Penn made one more feature - the similarly maligned revisionist western The Missouri Breaks (1976) - before retreating for a time to theatre. Nine days after Night Moves opened across the nation, Steven Spielberg's Jaws (1975) premiered at the head of a $2 million publicity blitz. Audiences and the majority of the major critics were apathetic to the plight of a private investigator who is unable to solve his big case because he is handicapped by his inability to see his own life with honesty. The filmmaker infused elements of his own life into the Night Moves script and his feelings of failure within the Hollywood community. Lost in the shuffle of Byzantine plot mechanics, sundry deceptions, twists, and double crosses was Penn's ruminations on identity and the guttering of American self-respect. until 1975, Night Moves had the misfortune to follow Roman Polanski's Chinatown (1973), Robert Altman's The Long Goodbye (1973), and Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation (1974) into cinemas it emerged during a glut of so-called "neo-noirs" (among these, Dick Richards' Farewell, My Lovely, Stuart Rosenberg's The Drowning Pool, Robert Benton's The Late Show, Michael Winner's The Big Sleep, and Walter Hill's The Driver) films that recalled the postwar noir thrillers but with a contemporary edge. Shot in 1973 on the tail of a writer's strike and unreleased by Warner Bros. (In the interim, he helmed a segment of the 1973 Olympics documentary, Visions of Eight, filmed in the aftermath of the massacre of Israeli athletes by Arab terrorists during the 1972 summer games in Munich.) Night Moves represented a departure from his earlier focus on lawbreakers - the folk heroes of the Left-Handed Gun (1958) and Bonnie & Clyde, the convict-on-the-run in The Chase (1966), the Turkey Day litterer of Alice's Restaurant (1969) - and focused instead on a tired Los Angeles PI (Gene Hackman) juggling professional and personal mysteries. Penn had absented himself from narrative filmmaking (in truth, from creative endeavors of any stripe) for several years, hot off the success of Bonnie & Clyde (1967) and Little Big Man (1970). Sharp's script had been named as a coy reference to the Universal Pictures executive building, known in the industry as The Black Tower in reworking Sharp's original scenario, a mystery set between the strangely complementary milieux of movie-making and artifact smuggling, was to emphasize a telling bit of business in the script about chess playing and the inability (or disability) of its detective hero in seeing the move he should have made. One of the first things that Arthur Penn did when he inherited the Alan Sharp script The Dark Tower from the director-producer team of Sydney Pollack and Mark Rydell was to change the title to Night Moves (1975). His life was intertwined with cars and pop culture from the beginning: His father worked as a limousine driver for silent film star Mary Pickford. Roth was born March 4, 1932, in Beverly Hills to German Lutheran parents. He took what he inherited from Von Dutch and, between them, they created an American art form.” “But he got absolutely no academic recognition. “He was a very singular figure and probably one of the best-known American artists in the country,” Robert Williams, who worked as Roth’s art director from 1965 to 1970, said Thursday. In the last two decades, as art museums and other institutions have begun taking a closer look at pop culture, Roth and his peers gained more respect from the academics who had long dismissed their works as lowbrow. His fans admired the energy and anti-establishment attitude he carried throughout his life. “I know what I am,” Roth told The Times in 1973. The company canceled his contract in 1967. Revell, however, lost its love for Roth when he began hanging out with members of the Hells Angels as his interest in customizing motorcycles grew. Roth, who was 6 feet 4, mentioned that he had been called “Big Ed” in high school, so the publicist suggested “Big Daddy,” which Roth loved. It was a Revell publicity man who came up with Roth’s nickname after telling him, “We can’t put ‘Beatnik Bandit by Ed Roth’ on the box.” The Revell company sold millions of Big Daddy Roth model car kits, from which Roth received a royalty of 1 cent each. The character’s wise-guy, street smart attitude lives on in such descendants as Bart Simpson, Ren & Stimpy and the foulmouthed “South Park” kids. Rat Fink’s sinister glare, razor-sharp teeth and bulging, bloodshot eyes became ubiquitous on T-shirts, posters and car decals in the ‘60s. Roth developed Rat Fink in the ‘50s as the underground culture’s response to Mickey Mouse. “His stuff was all outrageous,” said Dick Messer at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, where the Outlaw car now resides. Nora Donnelly, who organized the “Customized” exhibition for the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, where it premiered last fall, said: “An enormous amount of people have been influenced by him, in the hot rod art world as well as in the contemporary art world.” “You can clearly see that influence on the arts, and it certainly had a bigger influence here in the West than it did in the East, where New York largely dominated the art world.” “Our specific purpose,” said Howard Fox, the museum’s curator of modern and contemporary art, “was to reveal the influence of the automobile generally, and the concepts of speed, the aesthetics of sleekness and the interest that painters and sculptors of the 1960s had in new materials we often associate with these fast-paced racing cars, and with “Big Daddy” Roth in particular. These plants are more attractive, non-invasive, long-term performers, are scaled for residential landscapes, and often available in nurseries. Do your homework before finalizing plant choices. Water-wise yards take more planning than ordinary landscapes but over time offer significant savings in labor and water costs. If you are redesigning your landscape or making simpler changes, create a plan. Determine where it is sunny or shady, dry or damp and spaces that are small or large. Applying mulch reduces evaporation and can reduce the need to water saving 20 to 30 gallons per 1,000 square feet each time you water. Mulch has shown to reduce the incidence of certain plant diseases. Typically, mulch consists of leaves, wood chips, grass clippings or compost. It is used as a groundcover on planted areas and bare soil to moderate soil temperature, reduce water evaporation, inhibit weed growth, and prevent soil erosion. Spread compost to a depth of 3 inches around the base of plants and shrubs, much like spreading mulch. Properly applied compos t serves as a natural fertilizer. Spread 2 to 4 inches of compost over the soil and turn it with a shovel to a depth of about 6 inches. It helps soil improve its texture, increase nutrient level and water holding capacity. Compost contains vital nutrients and supports a diverse array of beneficial organisms from microscopic bacteria to earthworms that supply organic matter to soil. Compost is the dark, rich organic material produced by the controlled natural decomposition of organic material such as leaves, grass clippings, pruning, and fruit and vegetable scraps. It helps sandy soils hold nutrients and water, and loosens clay soils. The best way to improve soil’s health is by adding compost. Protecting plants from pests and diseases.Recycling nutrients and make them available to plants.Creating a loose sponge-like structure that allows air, water and nutrients for plant root growth.Microorganisms help fortify soil in our landscapes by: These beneficial creatures are an essential part of soil’s complex web. Did you know that a teaspoon of soil contains over 4 billion microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, nematodes, and protozoa. Carbon is a vital component of rich soil. Healthy soil provides air, water and nutrients for plants and serves as nature’s environmental protector and plays a part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by removing carbon dioxide from the air and storing it in the soil. Toxic-free Alternatives for Pest Controlįertile, nourished soil is the foundation for a heathy yard and garden. This approach takes a bit more planning but over time offers significant savings in labor and water costs. The local militia had to be involved and swiftly ended with Tun´s attempt on the crown. The macedwarf then decided to take the heirloom for himself, trying to steal one of the few memories from Mosus. The artifact in question is a faimily herloom from the late Mosus Tangathsem, who after being possesed died tragically of thirst. It all began when the farmer Kadol Möroloshur decided to share vital information on "Usurnulral" to a visiting Macedwarf, Tun Nomish. The great fortress of Temptedome has been forced to close their tavern to the public after a series of ugly incidents. I thought you just delivered the items you wanted to trade, and the game would figure it out itself, eventually I found the actual trade screen. I didn't realize how trading actually worked until like 4 years in. Eventually I wanted to separate out the high quality goods, but it was a major hassle to go through dozens of generically named stockpiles and try to set the filters just right. Proper stockpile management needs to be done from the start. It'd be nice if WOs could be split up by type, Furniture, Finished Goods, Weapons, Armor, etc. The Work Order screen quickly becomes a mess. Love the game, but some gripes, and some things I learned: I don't think I'll fend off this wave of 15 werecapybaras. While that incident also repelled, it clearly wasn't the end. Sadly, not long after four of my dwarfs transformed into capybaras themselves. With the beast slayed I thought I might have averted disaster. I gave my attack order then watched as the combat log described my dwarfs gleefully punching the monster to death. So when a Werecapybara decided to attack my humble fortress, I was taken a bit by surprise. Did not have a hospital set up because I hadn't dug enough to break into any canverns and had been attacked outside a single goblin snatcher trying to steal kids. Had a couple military squads, though I created uniforms I didn't actually apply them. However, I was playing very conservatively and thus did not take certain things into account. When I started this made a few basic forts that all collapsed because I didn't properly set up a water source for when the nearby rivers froze.įinally got working on a fortress that that lasted like 20+ hours, 120 pop. I had a brief fling with DF a few years ago but never got real far with it. |
